ESO4: Irish music and 20th c. history

Here you have the videos of the two events we are dealing with in the English lesson about Irish History.

ZOMBIE, by The Cranberries
Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
When the violence causes silence,
Who are we mistaken?

But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.
In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, dou, dou, dou, dou, dou...

Another mother's breakin',
Heart is taken over.
When the vi'lence causes silence,
We must be mistaken.

It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.
In your head, in your head they're still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying...

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, oh, ya, ya-a...
BLOODY SUNDAY, by U2
I can't believe the news today
Oh, I can't close my eyes and make it go away!

How long?
How long must we sing this song?
How long?
How long?

'Cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...

Broken bottles under children's feet
Bodies strewn across the dead-end streets
But I won't heed the battle call
It puts my back up, puts back up against the wall!

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
All right lets go!

And the battles just begun
Theres many lost but tell me who has won
The trenches dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart!

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

How long...how long must we sing this song?
How long?
How long?

'Cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight
Tonight (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Tonight
Tonight (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Tonight
Come get some!

Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away
Wipe your tears away
I wipe your tears away (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
I wipe your blood shot eyes (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)

Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Here I come!

And it's true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die!

The real battle yet began (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
To claim the victory Jesus won (Sunday, Bloody Sunday
on...

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday...

Karaoke version with real footage of the Anglo-Irish conflict:

 Your turn:
1. The Cranberries' song mentions 1916: what happenned in Ireland that year?
2. U2's song, Bloody Sunday refers a violent historical event. When did it happen? What happenned?
3. There are several similarities between both songs. Mention some of them: e.g. family.
4. Where is war placed in the former song? And in the latter? (they are parts of the body=metaphor).
5. Did you like the songs? Did you know them? What is the value of music in reporting these events?

ESO1: Xmas decorations.

Today I'm not in school-I'm with my 4th ESO students in Barcelona discovering the medieval walls and walking to the Christmas market. Yesterday, we sang a very nice carol, Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer. Congratulations!: you sing very well and it was really fun! :)

Today I propose you two activities:
1- Write a Season's Greetings postcard. Fold a DINA 4, draw a Xmas/Winter element on the cover and your name on the back (one side of the paper). Inside (on the other side of the paper) write a message, for example:

SEASONS GREETINGS and a Happy New Year 2012!
(Bones festes i bon any nou 2012!)

2- Decorate our class. Here you have some ideas. Use your color-pencils, scissors and glue and... be creative!

ESO3-A Cover lesson. Simple Past. My worst day at school.

Complete the text with the right verb in the simple past (regular and irregular verbs). You will find:
a) Affirmative: Regular infinitive + -ed (worked); irregular (second column: go-went)
b) Negative: didn't + infinitive (you didn't work; I didn't go). LOOK!: *You didn't worked *I didn't went
c) Question: did + subject + infinitive (did Atif study hard? did Isabel come yesterday?)
LOOK!: *did Oriol studied hard? did Nicaury came yesterday? (These are wrong! We use the bare infinitive with the auxiliary DID)

Vocabulary:
wet= mullat
argument= discussió (false friend!)

1.Copy in your worksheet
3rd paragraph:
After lunch we _______ (have) history. The teacher ______ (ask) me a question: 'When ____ Christopher Columbus ________ America?' (discover) I ________ (answer) '1942'. Everyone _______ (laugh). I ________ (be) really embarrassed.

4th paragraph:
When I ________ (leave) school, it _______ (start) to rain. I ____  _______ (not have) my coat with me so I _____ (get) very wet. Later in the evening I ______ (have) an argument with my mum. It ____ (be) a terrible day.

2.Answer these questions:
1. Why did John  miss the bus to school?
2. Did John do well in the maths exam?
3. Why couldn't John buy lunch?
4. Why did everyone laugh at John in the history lesson? (When did Columbus discover America?)
5. Who did John have an argument with in the evening? (amb qui va discutir el John al vespre?)

3. Look at the picture... what things people say bring bad luck? Draw it and match.
a.broken                                        1.umbrella
b.black                                          2. salt

4.Think about your worst (or best) day at school. Make a list of bad/good things that happened.
E.g. I lost something (vaig perdre alguna cosa...)
I got a 10 in an exam (vaig treure un 10 a un examen)

5. EXTRA-Revision: make a list of the sentences where you find this combination: adjective + name. What do they mean?
It was a terrible day - Va ser un dia terrible!

ESO1: Me!

Introduce yourself drawing a picture of yourself and then writing about 4 aspects:

  • 1-Personal information (what's your name?, how old are you?, where are you from? where do you live?)
  • 2-Your family (who do you live with? have you got any brothers or sisters? have you got any pet?)

And soon will be here.

1st ESO: Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer
http://xmasfun.com/Lyrics.asp?ID=49

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen,
Comet and Cupid and Donder and Blitzen.,

But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Had a very shiny nose,
And if you ever saw it,
You could even say it glows.

All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names;
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve,
Santa came to say:
Rudolph with your nose so bright,
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"

Then how the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee,
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,
You'll go down in history."

2nd ESO: Jingle Bells

Dashing through the snow
On a one-horse open sleigh
Over the fields we go
Laughing all the way;
Bells on bob-tail ring
making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight
Jingle bells
jingle bells
jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh

A day or two ago
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side;
The horse was lean and lank;
Misfortune seemed his lot;
He got into a drifted bank
And we
we got upsot
Jingle Bells
Jingle Bells
Jingle all the way!
What fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh

A day or two ago
the story I must tell
I went out on the snow
And on my back I fell;
A gent was riding by
In a one-horse open sleigh
He laughed as there
I sprawling lie
But quickly drove away
Jingle Bells
Jingle Bells
Jingle all the way!
What fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh

Now the ground is white
Go it while you're young
Take the girls tonight
And sing this sleighing song;
Just get a bob-tailed bay
two-forty as his speed
Hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack! you'll take the lead
Jingle Bells
Jingle Bells
Jingle all the way!
What fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh
